Lucan Minor Hockey - Tryout/Evaluation Information Page
Tryouts are an exciting and stressful time for any minor hockey player and their parents. This information page sets out the basic structure and parameters for Lucan Minor Hockey to operate tryouts for representative hockey and evaluations for creating balanced local/house league teams.
As a reminder, LMH is only successful with the support of volunteers. Inappropriate behaviour (i.e. harassment) will not be tolerated and will be handled in accordance with by-laws of the organization and/or as best determined by the Executive.
General expectations/information
-
All players attempting to secure a position must make all attempts to attend all skates and games
-
U13 and above tryout for a position - forward or defense - which is confirmed at attendance of their first tryout
-
Goalies (U9+) will be evaluated in specialized tryout sessions in addition to the age-specific tryouts
-
Exceptional players seeking to play at a higher level must make their intentions known prior to the start of tryouts of both age groups. In order to be offered a position the by-laws requirements must be met.
-
Non-LMH players must play in all games
-
Evaluators must never be approached to discuss tryout results, standings, opinions, or any other questions related to tryouts/evaluations. All questions must go to [email protected]
-
As requested, past coaches will provide feedback on players to the future coach
Missing Tryouts
We understand that there are valid reasons to miss a tryout including but not limited to important family events and injuries. In addition, for OWHA players, we recognize that players attempt to make a higher level team at other centres (i.e. AA) which may be operating at the same time as our tryouts.
-
At a minimum, all players must attend at least 1 tryout
-
Evidence supporting missing tryouts may be requested (e.g. Dr note, tryout schedule at a higher competition level)
-
As soon as a player is unavailable to attend a tryout, an email must be sent to [email protected]
-
Considerations for missed tryouts will be determined through consultation with the Tryout Committee
Skills Assessment
Lucan uses a common skills evaluation model focused on core competencies such as skating, puck control, shooting, and hockey sense. There is a higher weighting for scrimmages and exhibition games.
U9/U11: 65% skills/drills, 35% scrimmages/games
U13-U18: 35% skills/drills, 65% scrimmages/games
Goalies: 65% during the dedicated goalie evaluations; 35% during age-specific group tryouts
Final Comments
While the above information sets the general expectations, there will always be unique situations that will be handled by the Tryout Committee which includes Evaluation Coordinators, League Reps (Shamrock+LMLL or OWHA+WOGHL), and President (at a minimum). Where needed, the full Executive will be consulted. Lucan Minor Hockey has the right at its discretion to grant player movement or non-movement for the betterment of LMH, while respecting OMHA/OWHA regulations.
